BAHAMAS

Boat seized by the Coast Guard with 1,500 gallons of booze from Nassau

Between 1920 and 1933, Prohibition was in effect in the United States – and the people of the Bahamas were making "boat loads" of money. Just a short boat ride from Florida, it was easy – and financially tempting – to smuggle rum into the U.S. and many Bahamian “rum runners” made huge profits selling Caribbean rum in Florida.

The moonshining and rum running tradition continues throughout the Caribbean today with the following well known moonshine titles from the various Island Nations:

Cuba – Gualfarina or Gualfara • Puerto Rico – Pitorro • Dominican Republic – Mama Juana

 Haiti – Clarin • Honduras – Guaro • Guatemala – Cushy • Nicaragua – Casusa
